The Dapper Dan Classic is the nation’s premier high school wrestling tournament. Dubbed the “Rose Bowl of Wrestling,” this annual exhibition features two exciting events: in one, top wrestlers from the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) square off against top wrestlers from a selected state; in the other, a roster of all-star wrestlers from Pennsylvania test their skills against an elite team of U.S. all-stars.

The 2014 Dapper Dan Classic will take place on Sunday, March 16, at the University of Pittsburgh’s Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, PA. Action begins at 4:00 PM when the WPIAL all-stars and Oklahoma (this year’s selected state) all-stars meet on the mats, and culminates with Pennsylvania against the U.S. at 6:00 PM.

In addition to showcasing the best prep wrestlers in the country, the Dapper Dan Classic has traditionally served as a predictor of future college wrestling success. Among the names on the long list of Dapper Dan participants that have gone on to win NCAA championships are Logan Stieber, Brent Metcalf, Quentin Wright, Cael Sanderson, Jarrod King, and Kellen Russell.

This year’s U.S. team is no exception, with the roster consisting of several of the country’s top wrestling prospects:

  • Brian Rossi
  • Nathan Boston
  • Steve Micic
  • Josh Alber
  • Joe McKenna
  • Tyler Berger
  • Bryce Brill
  • Ryan Blees
  • Bo Nickal
  • Johnny Sebastian
  • Chip Ness
  • Kyle Snyder
  • Nick Nevills

With Snyder already spending time at the Olympic Training Facility in preparation for the 2016 Games, and Blees, Nevills, Boston, and Berger committed to top Division I programs like Oklahoma State, Penn State, Iowa State, and Nebraska, respectively, there’s a good chance fans watching the 40th Annual Dapper Dan Classic will be seeing a future gold medalist or NCAA champ in person.

If you’re anywhere near Pittsburgh on March 16, we urge you to buy tickets to this event. You won’t be disappointed!
